The protective membranes used in hemodialysis and the breathable patches used for IV infusion may look ordinary, but behind them lies medical-grade processing technology with an extremely high barrier to entry. Cheng Kang Biotech, once a core member of Taiwan’s national mask production team, has successfully transformed under General Manager Hsin-Yuan Chiang. With its proprietary micro-dot lamination technology, the company has entered the supply chain for high-end medical devices such as hemodialysis and infusion breathable membranes, creating a powerful new engine of growth.

The pain point: bonding high-performance membranes to rigid plastics
Chiang explained that high-performance filter membranes such as PP and PTFE offer excellent bacterial barrier properties. However, bonding them to the rigid plastics commonly used in dialysis tubing and breathable housings often leads to high scrap rates because of poor material compatibility. Forcing the bond with high-temperature or ultrasonic welding can leave micro-holes in the membrane that are invisible to the naked eye, allowing bacteria to pass through, so that an entire batch of costly medical devices has to be discarded.

The solution: composite filter media with melt micro-dot lamination
To solve this problem, Cheng Kang Biotech developed an innovative composite filter media. Using a melt micro-dot lamination process, the delicate high-performance filter membrane is sandwiched between two layers of plastic-compatible nonwoven fabric. This protects the membrane from damage and scratches during production, and allows the finished material to bond tightly to plastic housings in downstream processing, eliminating the long-standing problem of welding-induced pinholes.

From masks to high-end medical devices
During the pandemic, Cheng Kang Biotech produced premium TN99 medical masks and served as a solid pillar of Taiwan’s epidemic prevention efforts. As the post-pandemic mask market turned into a price war, Chiang redirected the company’s precision testing equipment and deep understanding of material properties toward developing high-end medical products, including bacterial filter membranes, infusion breathable membranes, hemodialysis breathable membranes, and bacterial filters.

This breakthrough lamination technology not only significantly reduces defect rates in medical device manufacturing, but also helps Taiwanese medical device makers reduce their long-standing reliance on imported membranes. Cheng Kang Biotech is committed to safeguarding patient health with safer, more reliable, and competitive domestically produced materials.
